By Carl Junkett from Peoria, Illinois on 1/14/2008
Pros:
Durable, Super heavy duty, Stylish, Goes down to 5.5 feet
Best Uses:
The kids love it!!
Describe Yourself:
Collegiate/Pro
Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this hoop to anyone. From the time we set this giant up in the driveway, we had people stopping by. The kids have yet to go a day without playing on it. They can put it down to 5.5 feet and slam dunk. The adults in the area have enjoyed it as well. This is the only hoop that we would have been able to slam dunk on!

Available Models
60" Acrylic - 60" Glass
72" Acrylic - 72" Glass

The Barbarian was developed not only to withstand the strongest slam dunks in the world, but to provide valuable experience for the young basketball stars of tomorrow. With the help of world class engineers, the Barbarian is the true world leader in basketball hoop design and performance. The Barbarian Basketball Hoop has the ability to adjust from 5.5 feet, (the lowest height on any basketball hoop on the market), to 10 feet with unmatched speed and ease. A 5 year old can raise and lower this basketball hoop.

The full steel reinforced backboard provides a true, solid rebound, with the least amount of vibration or shaking. All metal parts are zinc powder-coated, and then black powder-coated for a clean, smooth feel and look, while also providing maximum protection against rust and weather-related damage. This is the most rust-resistant basketball hoop sold today.

Additional Features:

* Made in Indianapolis Indiana, United States
* 5 x 5 3/16-inch steel extension arm
* Powder-coated steel with zinc powder-coat primer
* Schutt Bully Jr. breakaway rim features NBA strength
* Aircraft-grade stainless steel hardware and rivets (not zinc coated like most systems)
* Through-the-backboard rim mounting eliminates possibility of backboard damage - there is no part of the rim that comes in contact with the backboard
* Overhang (distance from the pole to the front of the backboard) of 4 feet
* Stainless steel frame around backboard; much stronger and longer lasting than aluminum
* .5-inch-thick acrylic backboard is much thicker than the 3/8-inch offered by most manufacturers, providing a far superior rebound - This is cast acrylic that will never "yellow"

Mounting: .5-inch mounting base plate attaches to four 1-inch bolts, not 5/8-inch bolts like most manufacturers. The bolts are set 10 inches apart, which is greater spacing than most basketball goals. This additional bolt spacing provides for a much more solid and stable basketball goal. This is unique to the Barbarian basketball hoop.

There are a lot of basketball hoops that are available in the market today, and it pays to do a bit of research before you lay down your hard earned money, especially in this economy. With that in mind, there are plenty of things to consider when looking to buy a new basketball hoop.

Location, location and location. As in business, location is something to consider when looking at basketball hoops. This is not in reference to the sales location, but the manufacturing location. There are two places that most of the basketball hoops sold in the United States are manufactured, the United States and China. There are several differences that are related to the hoops made in each location, the first is finish.

The finish on a basketball hoop is the paint or other coating that is applied to give the hoop color and a protective finish. However, there are some differences in how those finished play out. First is preparation. There is a lot of preparation needed to get a basketball hoop ready to paint or powder coat. In the United States it is common practice to acid wash, a process by which all bare metal is wash with acid and then rinsed off, and then the metal is sand blasted. These two processes ensure that oil and residue that has been deposited on the bare metal during the production process is removed. Why you ask? Well there is a very good reason, adhesion. That is correct, if this process is not followed, the paint or powder coating will not stick to the bare metal. Here is a picture of a basketball hoop that did not go through this process.

rusty basketball hoop

As you can see, the basketball hoop pictured is not retaining its powder coating very well. This is because this basketball hoop was manufactured in China, were they do not acid wash or sand blast their bare steel before painting or powder coating. What happens is that when paint or powder coating is applied over steel, it creates a protective shell, this is true regardless of the preparation work that has been done. The trouble is when the coating is scratched. If a basketball hoop that has been prepared properly is scratched, the scratch will rust, but only the scratch. On the other hand if a basketball hoop that was not properly prepared is scratched, the rust will travel under the finish allowing large patches of paint or powder coating to fall off. Inevitable this leads to most if not all of the paint or powder coating falling off.

Basketball Hoops are not as Thick as a Brick

Another thing to consider when looking at basketball hoops is the thickness of the backboard. This too is related to where the hoop is made. Basketball hoops made in China are processed in a way to save as much money as possible. This fact not only process a poor finish but it also yields thinner backboards. The standard for a backboard on a basketball hoop made in China is 3/8". That is for glass as well as acrylic. This is very thin. So thin that the performance of the ball bouncing off of the backboard is effected. More mass equals greater rebound. The second factor is strength. Thinner backboards break more often, and with surprising frequency. The minimum acceptable thickness for glass and acrylic backboards should be 1/2". Another thing to keep in mind when choosing your basketball hoop is that acrylic has virtually the same rebound when using a full steel frame and a steel frame behind the shooters square, with 10 times the strength of glass.

To Zinc a Basketball Hoop or not to Zinc?

The hardware that comes from China and is supplied with the basketball hoops manufactured there, used zinc coated nuts and bolts or low-grade stainless steel. Both of these alternatives will rust over time. The best basketball hoops made use aircraft-grade stainless steel hardware, the best you can get anywhere. This type of hardware will never rust.

As you can see, location, at least when considering manufacturing, is important, very important. Basketball hoops are a popular sporting item and millions of people enjoy the game every year. Just be sure that if you and your family, school or church are going to be investing a large amount of money in a tight economy, the you get the best that your hard earned money can by and consider if the basketball hoop is made in China or the United States, you will be glad that you did!

Basketball Hoops in Retail Stores

When you are looking for a basketball hoop for your home, church or where ever, consider what is available to look at. In this day and age, you do not have to travel down to the local department store to see the basketball hoops that are available for purchase. If fact you would be doing yourself a disfavor. Why? Because there is no way that any retail store has the ability to carry all of the different basketball hoops that are available for you to choose from. Space is the main issue here. Basketball hoops take up a lot of storage space. It would require a large warehouse to hold just one of each of the available basketball hoops on the market today. The other problem is displays. It would be very hard for a single store to have a display unit of each of the basketball hoops that they carry. The amount of floor space needed would eliminate the ability for the retail store to offer and other products for sale. The fact of the matter is, basketball hoops are large and they take up a lot of space.

Basketball Hoops and the Internet

The best alternative in today's day and age is the Internet. There, companies have the ability to show off hundreds of products all in less space than a single basketball hoop would take up. The other advantage is selection. There are hundreds of basketball hoops sold in the United States and many different manufacturers. The Internet allows customers to shop around and see what is available and at what price. A customer can choose a new basketball hoop and have it sent to their home right from the comfort of their favorite easy chair. Customers can compare features and prices along with reviews and other customer insights. However, there is a word of caution to consider, legitimacy. The barrier of entry is low when it comes to selling merchandise on the Internet. It is the Wild West out there and the buyer need be aware. There are re-sellers out there who claim to be basketball hoops experts yet they do not manufacture basketball hoops, they have never installed a basketball hoop, they have just put up a Website and started to sell basketball hoops. The caution here is to be sure that you are talking to someone who really does know about basketball hoops, not just someone who is trying to make a buck. The salesperson should know all about the basketball hoops that are being sold, ,and should not need to call someone else to get an answer for you. This is certainly a bad sign. Also remember that just because someone has listed the lowest price it does not mean that you will get solid support or even your basketball hoop!

The bottom line with respect to the whole brick & mortar vs. the Internet is a debate that will last for years. However one thing does hold true, and that is the fact that you can certainly see more and find more information about basketball hoops on the Internet than in any store. The selection will be much better. However, be careful when talking to sales people, many claim to know what they are talking about but few actually do. Do your homework and look for the basketball hoop that will meet your needs and last well into the future.
